Answer Paywizard:

I understand you are concerned about the state of the labor force, both domestic and international, as well as pressures to work in the face of increasing wealth disparities.  While I am a wizard, I am afraid my powers do not include mind reading.  Therefore, I cannot speak to your particular profession or industry and experiences.  However, let me provide a few resources that may be of interest to you, given your unease.

The World Is Flat: A Brief History of the Twenty-first Century by Thomas L. Friedman discusses global developments, such as the lowering of trade and political barriers and the advancement of technology that have created conditions for increased globalization.

Globalization is not categorically good or bad, but rather, it is a current reality that behooves us all to become more informed consumers, workers, investors, and voters, in an increasingly complex, increasingly global economy and society.

Because you are concerned about how long you will need to work in order to be able to support yourself in retirement, let me provide a few resources for you to help you learn and perhaps make some decisions for your future needs:

Bloomberg’s retirement calculator allows you to calculate how much money you’ll have at retirement with or without Social Security.

CNN’s retirement calculator enables you to gauge how well your savings program is preparing you for retirement based on what you estimate you will need – and then helps you figure out what you’ll need to do to get there.

Social Security Online includes information about retirement eligibility, age, benefit calculators, information about working after retirement, as well as an online application for benefits.

Good luck!
