What can you eat on a minimum wage?
3 June 2021 – The United States has varied minimum wages of any developed country. Despite the existence of a federal minimum wage law of $7.25 (), the country’s 50 states have their own per-hour minimum wages. Current wages for states range from $5 in southern states to about $11-$15 in states like California and New York.
Do these wages satisfy living costs? Assuming the standard $7.25 per hour wage, for example, 1 litre of milk would cost about $0.85, a kilogram of rice about $4, and a dozen eggs cost $2.30. Now, accounting for more expensive items, 1 kilogram of cheese is $11.07 and bottle of wine is $12.
